National Pet Hydration Awareness Month
July 11, 2022
The Dog Days of Summer are here!
It is not uncommon to step outside in July and think: “WOOF! It is HOT!”. Enter, the dog days of summer, the hottest days of the year, which happen from July 3 through August 11. This rise in heat makes it an important time to keep your pets hydrated — just in time for National Pet Hydration Awareness Month!
Here are some tips to keep your pets hydrated during the dog days of summer.
- Keep an eye on your pet’s water bowl and know how much water your furry friends need. If you’re not sure, call and ask your vet!
- Using a water fountain for your cat can help entice them to drink more water.
- Ensure your pet has access to fresh, clean, water all day.
- Bring water with you. Whether you’re just going out to the yard or going on an adventure to the park, make sure you bring plenty of water and pause for frequent water breaks. Remember, if you’re thirsty, your pet probably is too!
- Have fun with water (not recommended for cats). Gently hose your dog down and play “catch the water from the hose”, fill up a dog-friendly kiddy pool with water for your pups to cool down in, or head to a pet-friendly beach or pool to go for a swim.
- Know the signs of dehydration. If you suspect your pet is dehydrated call your vet right away. Common signs include:
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea
- Loss of energy
- Excessive, ongoing panting
- Loss of appetite
- Sunken, dry eyes
- Dry, sticky gums
- Loss of skin elasticity
